Is the American Dream a Marketing Ploy?

Hey folks! Transparency Disclosure- Some of the links in this article are affiliate links. That means I'll receive a small committee if you decide to click on it and buy something. Don't worry, it doesn't cost yous anything actress!

What is the American dream? Is it that white picket fence in suburbia with 2.5 kids, a dog, and a cat? That'due south what the marketers have been trying to tell us, isn't it? That we won't be happy until nosotros accept our giant house filled with all of our things? When did acquiring more stuff get the measurement for happiness in our guild?

I don't know about you, but I think that being trapped in an insanely expensive mortgage seems more like a nightmare than a dream. The exterior layer of the dream – that happy suburban couple – is just a cover. The reality is that the American dream is merely a marketing ploy to get you saddled with a four-hundred-thousand dollar mortgage, ii l-yard dollar cars, and loads of consumer debt. The image of the perfect life is on display, simply it's just that, an image. Nigh people would take to drown themselves in debt to afford that version of the American dream. When did consumerism go the American dream?

Consumerism and the American Dream

Perhaps I'grand confused, and perchance I don't sympathize the American dream correctly. But from what I've seen of it, it'due south based on consumerism.  Buy this new shiny matter and you will be happy! This super expensive automobile volition give you your dream life! Yous need the newest and fanciest gadgets in your house in order to be living the dream! And really, it'due south all bullshit. None of that stuff will make you happy. It's just stuff. Stuff that impresses people who you lot don't even know and who don't actually thing to y'all. Why go through the endeavour?

Was it e'er like this? Was I just besides young to remember information technology? It seems like the American dream isn't real, it'southward but a wild fantasy fabricated upwards by marketers to get yous to part with more than and more of your difficult-earned money. It'due south a marketing ploy. And the crazy matter is, information technology's working.

The Marketing Industry

A 2022 report showed that the marketing manufacture made up a whopping 19% of the US GDP in 2014. That's over 3.5 trillion dollars! And that was dorsum in 2014 – I'd imagine that it's an even greater number at present. In that location's a reason why companies spend so much money on advertizing – information technology works! They wouldn't spend that much coin if they didn't get a pretty hefty return on their investment. Their unabridged goal is to get yous to want more and more and more. They sell you lot the dream that their products tin can provide you lot with some semblance of happiness, just is that really true?

What Really is the American Dream?

Is that the American dream and so? Drowning in debt so we can purchase the shiny crap they are selling us for fleeting moments of happiness? I don't remember it is. I think too many of us (myself included!) got caught upward in the idea that these are the things that would make u.s. happy.

The reality of the American dream is that it'southward a consumeristic trap. People become into debt to buy all of those things that the marketers are pushing, then they go stuck. They go trapped in the spiral of consumerism because it'due south and so hard to dig your way out so why carp trying? People become stuck in the system – they piece of work forty plus hours a week with minimal time off, all to afford this lifestyle that was sold to them as the dream. No wonder depression and anxiety run rampant in the United States. Almost of us are living our lives with merely the illusion of freedom.

But the truth is, you lot can't be trapped in this system and merits that you are free. You aren't costless. You are stuck.

There is an Escape

It doesn't have to be this way though. Nosotros don't have to buy into this consumeristic culture and we don't have to purchase all the things that they are selling. We tin can opt-out and get dorsum to the basic, key American dream – liberty.

Freedom is the Real American Dream

The real American dream however does exist – but it's non what they are selling you lot. It's liberty – the freedom to opt-out of the consumeristic culture that we've developed. For me, fiscal independence is the way out. Once I reach financial independence, I'll be able to alive my life for myself, rather than for any company I owe money to (banks, credit bill of fare companies, motorcar financers, etc). Simply imagine what you could do if yous weren't beingness held dorsum by financial obligations!

Do what Makes You happy

Don't get me incorrect- information technology's not inherently bad to want all the things. It'due south actually pretty normal! And you aren't any less of a person if y'all chose to stay in the game and pursue all those fancy new objects. That's your choice and I'm not judging information technology.

My biggest issue with it is that society has sold united states this lie that that's what nosotros are SUPPOSED to practise, and that'south but not true. We don't need to buy all the things to be normal, happy people. We can pursue our passions, spend our time and money on experiences, and live our lives for ourselves. Companies wouldn't make equally much off of united states if we all did that though, then that'southward not what they are selling.

I guess the only communication that I want to go out you with is this: do what makes YOU happy. You don't have to buy a new phone every two years because the screen is negligibly larger and all your friends have it. Buy a new telephone if information technology will truly brand you happy.  The aforementioned concept holds true for annihilation you are thinking of buying. Will that item actually enrich your life, or are y'all just getting it for the prototype or considering someone made you feel similar you should?

Alive your life the way yous meet fit, avert the pleas of the marketers, and live your own version of the American Dream.
