"Lone Again (Naturally)" is a song by Irish singer-songwriter Gilbert O'Sullivan. It was released in 1972 at the aforementioned time every bit, merely not included on, the album, Dorsum to Front. Lyrics [edit]

"Lonely Again (Naturally)" is an introspective ballad. In the first verse, the singer contemplates suicide subsequently having been left "in the lurch at a church"; in the second, he wonders if in that location is a god; finally, he laments the death of his parents. O'Sullivan has said the vocal is not autobiographical: his mother was alive during its composition; O'Sullivan was eleven when his father, who was cruel to his mother, died, and he's said that he didn't know his father well.[7] O'Sullivan afterward commented "Neil Diamond covered "Solitary Once more (Naturally)" and said he couldn't believe a 21-year-old wrote it, only for me it was just one song I had written".[8] Neil Sedaka was similarly effusive in his praise for the song, stating as he covered the song in 2020 that he wished that he himself had written the vocal because its complexity was more typical of a human much older than 21.[nine] The vocal is included on O'Sullivan'south The Berry Vest of Gilbert O'Sullivan album (2004) on the EMI record label. Big Jim Sullivan plays the guitar pause in the original recorded version of the vocal.

Copyright lawsuit [edit]

K Upright Music, Ltd five. Warner Bros. Records Inc. , 780 F. Supp. 182 (S.D.Northward.Y. 1991), was a copyright example heard by the United States District Court for the Southern Commune of New York. The instance pitted singer/songwriter Gilbert O'Sullivan against rapper Biz Markie later on Biz Markie sampled O'Sullivan's song "Alone Again (Naturally)". The court ruled that sampling without permission can authorize equally copyright infringement. The judgment changed the hip hop music industry, requiring that any future music sampling be preapproved by the original copyright owners to avert a lawsuit.[26]

Maison Ikkoku [edit]

This song, along with another ane of O'Sullivan's songs, "Get Down", were featured as the opening and ending for episode 24 of the Japanese anime striking Maison Ikkoku. At the time, O'Sullivan was signed to production visitor Kitty Film'southward associated tape characterization, Kitty Records, which wanted to use the anime's popularity every bit a style to promote the vocalist'due south career in Japan. According to series manager Kazuo Yamazaki, the reason the songs were dropped later on only one episode was that they were unpopular with viewers; due to copyright issues, they were non included on the English language-language American release of the anime, replaced by the previously used Japanese theme songs. Many artists have covered the song. Amid the more notable are a version by Nina Simone, included as a bonus rail on the 1988 digital reissue of her 1982 album Fodder on My Wings; and a version by Lazlo Bane's frontman Republic of chad Fischer, from the 2009 blithe moving picture Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs. Both versions characteristic substantially rewritten lyrics; Simone'southward version savagely exhumes her troubled relationship with her belatedly father, whereas Fischer'south version explores the unrequited desire of an acorn for the prehistoric squirrel who one time chased it. As well in 2015, Diana Krall released a duet version with Michael Bublé on her album titled "Wallflower".[27]
